About Amherst

Welcome to Amherst, the Sandstone Capitol of the world! A historic city located just a short distance from Lake Erie, Amherst boasts a population of approximately 12,000 people.  The city is conveniently located 30 miles west of Cleveland and 90 miles east of Toledo.

Early commercial establishments in the area include a gristmill, sawmill and several quarries which produced a fine grade of stone used in buildings throughout Ohio.  Much of the area’s growth can be attributed to its legacy from earlier geologic times, as Amherst once sat atop extensive layers of sandstone. The quarry industry brought the railroad to Amherst and stimulated the shipping industry on Lake Erie.

The Amherst real estate market contains a good mix of high-tech businesses and a quaint downtown area, supported by a non-profit with the goal of maintaining its heritage.  Amherst offers an alternative to suburban and urban living by retaining small-town friendliness complete with commerce and industry, excellent schools, hospitals, places of worship, parks, service clubs and other amenities that enhance residents’ experiences.
